There are few things I think would be good experimenting subjects for OCTs. I thought I'd post it here to get few thoughts from others. I can't think of much negative things about them, but usually people surprise me with their thoughts of how it could go bad. That helps tweaking the rules and get rid of the possible bad scenarios. So, hope to get some useful feedback

SUBJECTS:

1-JUDGING BY MARKS

Instead of voting to terminate, each judge would give marks instead. Then, marks are averaged and the one with better marks advance.

Alternatively, judging by ranking could be done instead, and then the rank is averaged instead of marks.
Feedback [31Dec2014]:The challenge of balancing marks arise. Judges might give high marks just for art and a weak story advance.
Possible solution 1: Use mark or rank by how interesting it is instead of marking every aspect of the entry.
Feedback [31Dec2014]:Mark ties challenge.

2-TERMINATION BY MARKS

As normal tournaments go, two are matched up and only one of the two advance. But with this idea, the two matched against might both advance or even both get terminated. Their marks are put against all the others in the roster. Then, the ones with lower marks/rank lose.
Feedback [31Dec2014]: Odds of repeated matches increase.
Possible Solution: Last round has more than just 2. Maybe even 4,6 or 8 people on last round would be good and have winner by marks.

3-CHOOSE YOUR OPPONENT

Instead of the judges go match two people randomly (or by some other random mean), the competitors make a list of all people in the roster putting the one they want to face the most at the top. Then, judges  try to make everyone face one of the top ones he wants. (And there can even could be ones that he doesn't want to face!)
Feedback [31Dec2014]: The challenge of getting unexpected opponent is lost.
Possible Solution: Not always choose the first in the list, but alternate on the top three choices instead.

4-FORFEIT METER

At the start of each round, everyone gives the percentage the chance he'd forfeit. If he thinks he'd never forfeit, he submits the chance he'd do incomplete. This would help the host have a chance for decision making, maybe by bringing people back, or maybe just put people with high forfeit rate against each other... I dunno, it is kinda sound helpful to know early.

5-TIME SPENT REPORT

I've already tried progress report, and it looks fantastic! ROUND1 Progress Report
So, I've thought it would be great if people add the time they spent on their entry (including breaks). So, once he decide he started working, he'll put the time he started. Once he decide he had enough for today, he put the time finished. So, it would look something like this: [12/25 9PM - 2AM]
And for having this piece of information, he gets some extra extension days!

6-TEASER POWER

(Incomplete)
Something done by competitors for a special kind of judges. Idea still rough.

7-Between rounds challenge

(April 1st)
Challenge competitors to do something before next round starts and rewarded by extension days. Example: Remake a part of an entry, write a judge comment about two entries, suggest ways to improve an entry, Make a spectator entry, etc..

8-Judgement before judgment

(April 30-2015)
Before judges start judging, competitors are told to write reasons why their opponent should win and then why they should win. This will be good to make judges make better judgement and notice qualities that they didn't notice, which means that the writer should think smart what he writes. Also, it would serve as an initial feedback to opponent and even to the competitor as he'll start noticing what he is missing. The question should be like this: "If your opponent was chosen as a winner, what would be the qualities that made him win? And if you won, what qualities would made you win?"

Hope to get a little feedback about those points either here or as a note, especially of what could go wrong. Even if you think there is almost 0% that thing could happen, just mention it as I might think otherwise ;)

Also, let me know if you want me to comment back. I'll try not to comment to help get as much as possible thoughts.

Hope I add more experiment subjects to this entry later.

1- Sounds a little bit more time consuming for the judges. Yet, it may be a bit more helpful for a possibly fairer winner. I do have a feeling that there's a few holes in that idea though.

2- I do like this idea, though it may be slightly unfair for a person who is somewhat better than the other. It depends on what do you mean. The big thing though, is that it would probably change this from an "OCT" to something else. Since tournaments are designed where one would win and the other would loose unless both looses. The idea of both winning could probably be repetitive and last for a very long time.

3- I would love this. However, there could be a chain of people wanting to fight the other. Such as a contestant named Cain wanting to go against another named Sally. Which Sally wants to against a guy named Lewis and Lewis wants to go against Cain. You may want to stick with the random.
It also removes the fun of being stuck against a random person and probably makes it easier to write a story for two rounds ahead.

I like a good challenge.

4- Yes. YESYESYESYES! It beats that person having to tell everyone that they may have to forfeit, even in the chats. Or at least the incomplete part.

5- It has been very calming to know if my opponent was finished or not.
The only problem is when the opponent has less progress. That sometimes tells the people "Hey, my opponent is not doing anything, so I may as well procrastinate!"

It could end up with unfinished entries or the "tortoise and the hare" effect.

6- I don't fully understand this idea. The only thoughts I can pull from this is telling the judges what our plots may be about. Either that or just make silly drawings teasing them.

7- I'd rather leave it with the spectator entries and probably some small contests to entertain the contestants. It may even drive us away from our real work just to have fun.

8- Sorry, but not a great idea. If I know people. Their goal is to win, not to help the other people win.
A guy named Tom could be done and Hank has just finished his pictures filled with cute jokes and awesome fights.
Tom would end up saying
"Well, he isn't so well on his entry since you can notice the long pause in a panel. There's also that slight line sticking out of a character in panel 3. As mine clearly is more perfect than his".

I can see most of these ideas happening, but you'd probably need to tweak them to be more fast, efficient, and entertaining between everyone.
I also can't wait for the second TEOCT!
Good luck on adding a few more creative ideas!
